Luyendyk, in a properly designed indycar, with Tom Carnegie, a proper track announcer. Luyendyk may have not taken pole position due to his car not passing tech after his previous attempt, but he made up for it this day; breaking all records. Things were great in the mid-to-late 90's. I don’t see what was wrong with it.
But for this year, Tony George created the IRL. He wanted to be a Bill France; owning the best track and the whole series. They raced under the previous year’s rules which is why Luyendyk was so fast. 1997 would see a new chassis and qualifying times nearly 20mph slower. Luyendyk took pole at 218mph. It took until 2003 to see 230mph again, and they swiftly reduced the engines to three liters and we never saw a 230mph lap again until 2014, which was after turbos came back.
CAn’t wail to see indy this year with the windscreens and in the fall.

Imagine telling someone in the late 90s that Tony George would eventually sell Indy and IndyCar to Roger Penske.

Thinking about that. If someone told me, I would pause, and then say, “That’s not entirely crazy. I can see Roger buying something like that.”

Tony George sucks. Realistically CART had some serious issues that needed fixing but the series was hugely popular at the time. NASCAR had nothing on CART at the time comparatively in fans or money . But Tony came along and sped up the downfall... just kinda ruined open wheel in the states for a number of years.
This is a great vid. I miss the turbo V8 CART/open wheel cars. Sound amazing, ridiculously fast .
Also, Tony George sucks.

i am an Indy head, I’m pretty sure that Tony George nailed the final nail in his plan to start the IRL after Penske won with the Mercedes V8 in 94, just rewatch the winner’s circle vid and knowing what we know now his demeanor and body language, ironic now that Roger and Penske Racing have bought the track and are now running the show. also going to be interesting to see when the race will be run under the current situation

I can't imagine Penske living many more years to run things. I wonder if Cendric will take over as CEO or just race manager. Who will screw it up after Roger is gone...

hadn’t thought about that, his record is pretty good I’m sure he has thought about that he’s getting pretty ancient, don’t remember hearing about any heirs coming along you may be right, he’s been his right hand man forever

Now Rogers son, Jay, ran Dragon racing but showed nowhere near the team building success his dad did. And He is more focused running his media group (Rolling stone, variety, etc....dayum!) a nd Formula E than Indy . But, he may be good at running the show and Tim running the racing.
It will still never be like Rogers results...more like Ferrari’s multi corporate approach. .

I forgot about his son, ok we can just watch it unfold and Roger will be Roger and prob do a great job getting everything in place to keep things going well after i am in the next plane of consciousness
